Modigliani is known for his stylized portraits and sensual nudes, but contemporaries engaged in ancient art outside of Europe have also inspired him. These notes visible in his early sculptures gave the main inspiration for the installation. To showcase his later works we refined the formes and shapes, and translated the soft lines of the nudes into space, to restore the discernable delicacy and naturalness of the paintings. Wall colours have played a special role here, with each of them evoking a place, a skincolour of a portrait, a piece of clothing, each playing an important role in the painter’s life.
